Aethel Digital is an agency of independent developers. We design and build websites for businesses that need them to produce work, not just exist, on a clear contract for each job — and you talk to the people doing the building.

Measure before building
Every engagement starts with a reading of what you already have. Often the answer is not a new website — it is three fixes to the one you own. We would rather tell you that than sell you a rebuild.

Structure, then words, then design
In that order, always. A beautiful page wrapped around the wrong argument still does not sell. Most agencies work the other way round because the design is what gets approved in the meeting.

Speed is a feature
Most visitors leave before a slow page finishes loading, so performance is not a technical nicety — it is the difference between an enquiry and a bounce. We build hand-written code, not page-builder output.

You own everything
Source code, hosting, domain, content. No proprietary platform, no licence that expires, no hostage situation. If you want to take the codebase to another developer, that is a normal Tuesday.
What we will not do.
Worth saying up front, because it saves both of us a call.
- We are a small team. If you need forty pages in two weeks, we are the wrong agency.
- We do not do SEO retainers that promise rankings. We build sites search engines can read, and say so plainly.
- We will not fabricate testimonials or invent client logos. What is on this site is what we can evidence.
- If the audit says your site is fine, we will tell you that and you will owe us nothing.
Where the name comes from.
Æthel is Old English for noble — the root sitting inside names like Æthelred and Æthelstan. It described something made well enough to be worth keeping.
That is the whole ambition: work that is still doing its job in three years, not a redesign you regret in eighteen months. The mark is the Æ ligature, drawn in straight lines because everything we build is measured.
